HSS straight shank bits are general purpose drills that can be used for a variety of materials, including hard metals, wood, and plastic. HSS straight shank bits are durable and resistant to heat due to their high concentrations of chromium and nickel. HSS straight shank bits are available in point angles of 118 and 135 degrees.
Cobalt drill bits are capable of drilling harder metals including stainless steel. 5% cobalt will drill the majority of hardened metals and is more durable.
